Now that winter is officially here, it is a little harder to get motivated to run, don't you think? Fortunately, most of us in the club find running buddies who set schedules and keep us company. That is what being in a running club is all about.
If you don't learn to play in the cold and enjoy the snow, these darker months
can be depressing. As a birthday/Christmas gift, my husband bought me skate
skies. Having been a skier prior to being a runner, I am very excited about
the cross training prospects. But also having been a hiker before becoming
a runner, you can't take the back country out of me either. Yesterday Deke,
my stepson Wes and I trekked up the access road on soft powder to the rocky
summit of Whiteface. If you haven't done it, and you are a skier, you should
consider putting it on your cross training list of things to try. The views
are spectacular on a crisp, clear winter afternoon. The output of energy rivals
the running race, but the trip down the gentle 5 mile road on cross-country
skies cannot be beat. I highly recommend it, and the conditions are usually
good through March.
Many thanks to all of you who helped to make the annual Christmas Party a
huge success! We had the biggest turnout I can remember. Ruby (Phil Jessen)
Pinkbottom executed an award winning performance. Jim Bob, Bad Santa (Werthmuller)
and elf Candi Shermerhorn kept the fun rolling as well. E. John and Chris
Cifone-Clohosey organized the event, and judging from the comments I have
heard, they did a stellar job.
A thank you is also in order for Dan and Janet Olden. They had an always well attended Breakfast Run in December and collected food for needy families. They also are hosting, in addition to the regular 5:30 p.m. Wednesday runs, a Saturday 8:30 a.m. mountain run for those preferring to get their hill workouts in daylight. They graciously provide a sports drink at the end of their runs, and I encourage anyone taking part on a regular basis to contribute a bottle or two of Gatorade once in a while to offset the cost to the Oldens.
In January, our club vice president, Todd Eicher, and his wife Michele will be hosting a breakfast run. It will be our first at their house on 32 Berry Drive off Bay Road near Lake Sunnyside. They have graciously changed the date of it to January 25, so that a few more of us can be there. Rumor has it that Michele and Todd make a mean "Runners" French toast.
This year as last, my plan is to ring in the New Year with the First Night 5K in Saratoga. What better way to celebrate! I am sure to see many Adirondack Runners there. But if not, I hope you will attend the January 29th meeting at The Meeting Place on Route 9, and learn about and take part in a little YOGA. I find it good for the body and mind.
Best of luck to Chad as he takes over the responsibility of Editing the Rundown! During the transition phase, don't forget that you can also access club news at our web site www.adirondackrunners.com .
Happy New Year to all! May you reach your goals for 2004.
