The headlines in the Post Star on Sunday September 21st read "A Perfect Day". After all of the hurricane business, we were at last back to terrific fall weather. My cousin from Chicago used to call days like we had that day "Lake George Days." The sky was a vivid blue and the clouds were scarce, high, white and fluffy. The air was crisp and fresh. As I headed out early to pick up breakfast for my company from Oregon, some hot air balloons were just clearing the mist. Outside Adirondack Bagels was a guy sitting in a lawn chair avoiding the airport crowd and enjoying the balloons from a far. Yes, the weather was perfect for just about anything, but today instead of running I was hiking up Buck Mountain, enjoying fresh picked Hicks apples, and oh yes, helping to host the outdoor wedding of my sister, Sue.
The point of this introduction you ask? Well perhaps it is just a reflection of how lucky I feel to live in a place with so many fun things to do. The area has swell places to run, but also great opportunities to cross train and just enjoy the fall season. Even my visitors from the west coast agreed. Buck Mountain was spectacular that day. You could see for miles. Whether you run, walk, hike, bike, kayak, golf (but not me!), rock climb, roller blade or chase balloons, just be sure you get out there and take advantage of this fantastic cool weather.
Speaking of great weather days, those of us who traveled to Lake Placid for the half marathon experienced some good conditions as well. Tom Little (brother of the amazing baby jogger woman from the Sawyers Run), son of Betty Little, had a fast time and managed to place third overall. Phil Jessen was 10th just ahead of Michael Burdeau who was 12th overall. The Adirondack Runners had many age group winners collecting hardware. Boiler Maker host, Chuck Mix, was on hand and posted a first in his age group. But most noteworthy was that Deana Endieveri completed the course that day, her first at that distance. She was looking very pleased with her accomplishment. If you are not familiar with Deana, she has more of a biking background, but slowly she is turning the corner to the sport of running. She apparently talked her friend, Kindra Chamberlin, into running with her. Kindra had a PR, which was easy for her as she had never run a race at any distance before. Nothing like starting with 13.1 miles!
At our next meeting, September 25th, we will be saying good-bye to Mark Regan as treasurer. He has done an incredible job and we on the executive board will truly miss him. On behalf of the club I want to express a huge thank you to Mark. He is a thorough guy and has spent countless hours keeping us organized and accountable.
I am excited for the Goblin Gallop coming up at the end of October. There is a new course and new facilities. Amy and Chris are working hard to make the race better and better all of the time. Let's hope that the great fall weather holds for them.
And speaking of races, I am hoping that the really fast, young, strong, serious runners (like myself-tongue in cheek) club members will mark their calendars because on Nov. 2nd our club will again face off against the Battenkill Club for a relay challenge. We have a cup to defend, to say nothing of our honor. The course will be around Lake Sunnyside. Contact E. John Loucks for details. It really is a fun competition .
Thanks Chuck and Sally Nacy for hosting the September breakfast run. And thanks also for helping out with the clock rental at the Spintacular. Our club is lucky to have so many qualified people who are willing to lend a hand, and make substantial time commitments on short notice.
I am looking forward to seeing you at the next meeting, the fall road clean
up, at Gen and Bob May's breakfast run or just on the roads or trails. And
as I write this I am not even concerned that I have had such a hectic week
teaching and am running another half marathon this weekend, because they just
tonight delivered my new, fancy, sea foam green and gray ,outdoor, under the
stars, on my new deck, HOT TUB! Yes! Life is good. (I am wondering if Deke
can calculate the cost per use on this one
.Who cares!)
