President's Message...

Presidents Message

The Moreau Emergency Squad Mile went off without a hitch. Cole Bramley, Will Venner and Gunnar Gramlich, our youthful race directors did a great job from what I hear. It was the same day as Mt. Washington, so we were kept posted of the event via cell phone. Congratulations to Ryan Pollock and Nancy Nicholson our winners. E. John challenged Ryan to do the mile in under 5:00 minutes. He was only 4 seconds off! Nancy posted an impressive 6:01. It was nice to here that 50% of the runners were under 18.

I would also like to congratulate our scholarship winners for this year. They are Heather Mitchell (LG), Nate Underwood (Qby.), Allison McNamara (Saratoga), Kevin Hall (G.F.), Meaghan Herbst (Ticonderoga) and Alex Hyde (Qby.). I had the privilege of being on the scholarship committee. I was awed with the candidates' academic achievements as well as their running successes. I enjoyed reading their well written essays and learning how running has played a roll in forming their character. It was difficult to narrow the field to just 6 winners. Thanks to Marcy Dreimiller and the other members of her committee for their excellent handling of the selection process. I am always impressed with this club and the time consuming jobs that its members take on to support the sport of running.

Coming up quickly in June is the 27th annual Distance Run. Candy Schermerhorn and Gen May have things pretty well set. Candi will be stepping down as co race director after this year and on behalf of the club I would like to thank her for the tremendous job she has done the past several years. It is our club's biggest race, attracting over 500 runners each year, and the race raises large sums of money for local charities.

Speaking of races, I hope you are getting ready for Race the Train on August 2nd.benefiting JCS Dollars for Scholars. I have to get a plug in for this race because besides teaching at Johnsburg, I am also a committee head for the race. It is an 8.4mile run on a mostly shaded dirt road along the Hudson River. And the hills aren't that bad!

At the Whiteface race a few weeks ago, I was happy that Chad Quirion, a fellow Adirondack runner, introduced himself to me. There are so many Adirondack Runner members that I don't know by sight. We usually take group photos before and/or after a race, so if you see us gathering, please come introduce yourself and let us snap your picture. Many of us are tired of the same "old" faces in the Rundown each month. At Dave Harrington's Breakfast run it was good to see Robert and Karen Armagno and Karen Zanni there. Hopefully soon we will be resurrecting the Runners Profile column in the Rundown, so we can get to know some of our members better.

Please remember, if you want to get more involved, there are always jobs to be filled, just give someone on the executive board a call. Our phone numbers are in the Rundown. Or you can reach me via e-mail at jilleblg@capital.net.

Hope to see you at the July 19th Breakfast Run at Sue Dornan's, at the Ultimate Runner competition on July 29th, or better yet at our next club meeting on July 26th at 7:30 p.m. at The Meeting Place.

Jill Pederson
