Presidential Thoughts...

We're coming down to the wire on plans for the Prospect Mountain Race. Just a few weeks left. We hope you'll be pleased with the decisions we've made for 2002 and the 13th running of the mountain.

It has made me think back to the first time I was involved in the race. Don McCabe was race director then. He along with Mary & Jeff Havens originated the race. I was on crutches, having broken my hip, so I didn't run that year. But, the next year I was really excited and ready to run. I loved it the first time I ran and enjoy it just as much every year to come.

One year I remember Don was so busy with the race day duties that he forgot to put his race number on and went through the finish as a bandit. Boy we have never let him forget that. We miss Don running, but are glad to see he walks it now.

The weather hasn't always cooperated what with rain and fog sometimes. Some years the crop of black flies and mosquitoes has been frustrating but that hasn't bothered me. I love being involved with the run.

I have fond memories of the runners and things that have happened over the years. People like Jim Dern, Jim Lindblade, Regina Tumidajewicz young and young at heart enjoy "conquering the mountain" and the challenge it presents. The thing is to enjoy running whether you do it in 50 minutes or 1:50 just do it. I hope to be able to do as well when I reach their time in life.

Then there are some that are in a class all by themselves. Congratulations to Larry Mancini, Dan Olden and Brian Teague. They have participated in all of the races.

I think all of the dedicated volunteers and sponsors through the years and thank them very much for the support.

This year we have a group that is signed up for the Triple Crown. That is Prospect Mountain, Whiteface Mountain and Mount Washington, what a commitment. I wish them well.

See you on top of the mountain.

Dave
